This review has perhaps the best headline to date: Jeez, things were pervier than you’d think back in the fifties.

Leave it to Hard Case Crime — that most excellent of imprints that has been treating vintage paperback and crime fiction fans for years now — to choose some vintage Lawrence Block from his prolific early years when the master churned out short fiction and paperback originals faster than most of us could outline a sample chapter. I just finished Block’s Borderline, and I have to admit, I was pretty surprised at just how twisted a book could be back then, and I’m no stranger to the occasional bit of Beacon, Midwood and other vintage sleaze pb’s.
