For fans of the Burglar series, this book is comfort food. It’s all the greatest hits, played well and in order. Block remains an impeccable prose stylist, and the book has a jazzy, breezy flow that makes it read faster than it has any right to. For newcomers, it might be better to start somewhere earlier in the series, just to savor the pleasures of the slow build of Bernie and Kirschmann’s professional relationship developing. They shouldn’t worry, though – they’ll get to The Burglar Who Counted The Spoons soon enough.
